There are many different reasons to visit Lourdes. Our campsite at the heart of Hautes-Pyrénées is less than 30 km from Lourdes. This is your chance to visit a legendary town that is famous all over the world.
Lourdes, the most important pilgrimage site in France
In 1858, a young shepherdess named Bernadette Soubirous was the witness to several apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The apparitions were officially recognised by the clergy a few years later. Lourdes today is a place of Catholic prayer and recollection and a world-famous pilgrimage site. Catholic pilgrims, the faithful, the sick and invalids of all nationalities come to pray each year at the Sanctuary and at the famous Massabielle Grotto, the cave where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette. There are other 20 places of worship in Lourdes that you can visit during your camping stay in the Pyrenees.
Visit Lourdes and the neighbouring area
At the foot of the Pyrenees, Lourdes has no shortage of attractions for visitors. You can visit the castle on a rocky spur and admire the panorama over the town and surrounding areas. If you want to go even further up in the world, then take the cable car (an attraction in itself!) to the Pic du Jer. Here you can enjoy an impressive view over the whole region. A 10-minute drive away, the Pyrenees Animal Park is a great day out for young and old alike. The animals enjoy a great deal of freedom and never hesitate to get a good look at the visitors, too! Do you want to get away from it all at the heart of nature during your visit to Lourdes? Take a trip to the Lourdes lake for a stroll, a spot of fishing or to play some golf and work on your swing. There are also plenty of excursions, hiking and cycling trails available during your day out in Lourdes near our campsite in Hautes-Pyrénées. For example, you can follow the Gaves Green Way through a wonderful valley in the Pyrenees. This is a delightful cycling trail running from Lourdes to Cauterets.
